No Landsmót - so what?

Hestasport welcomes you to different activities!

The Icelandic Horse Championship 2010 will NOT take place from 27th of June to 4th of July! This is no reason at all to be worried, since the Skagafjörður area has however a lot to offer.
Use the opportunity to get to know parts of North Iceland you have never visited before or finally enjoy activities you have never found the time for to do.

Itinerary:
We start our tour with a drive along the west coast of Skagafjörður and go all the way up to the top of the peninsula Skagi. In June 2008 a polar bear appeared here and we will hear the story about it. Furtheron the inhabitants of the farm Hraun will introduce us to all their farmwork which includes not only sheep, but also eider ducks and the collection of down feathers, as well as trout fishing and curing. The lighthouse at Skagatá is a special destination and we will get the opportunity to have a closer look at it. After this interesting visit we circle the peninsula, come into the bay Húnaflói and reach Kálfshamarsvík. Around 1900 here was a fishing station and a small settlement, but it was finally abandoned around 1940. Signposts, bearing the names of the buildings and inhabitants, and much other information have been put up in various places in Kálfshamarvík. From here we head to Blönduós where we visit the Sea Ice Exhibition that tells about Iceland's historic struggle with sea ice, which includes the unlucky stuffed polar bear whose story we heard this morning. In the late afternoon / early evening we will be back at Varmahlíð.

Sunday, 4.July:
- Rafting in the West Glacial River at 10:00 and 14:00 (easy to moderate trip, ca. 4-5 hours)
- Rafting in the East Glacial River at 10:30 (more exciting river, ca. 6 hours)

- From Vindheimamelar: Short riding tours from 1 hour up to daytours, on request.

- Guided daytour in Skagafjörður: "Silver of the Sea"
Itinerary:
Our destination today is Siglufjörður and the award-winning herring era museum. The tour starts with a scenic drive along the east shore of Skagafjörður. After driving through the single lane tunnel we soon come to the romantic village of Siglufjörður. We visit the famous and highly awarded museum and as a highlight women of the village even demonstrate how the herring was salted and packed in barrels. After lunch we head to Hofsós, a small village at the east side of Skagafjörður. You may choose if you would like to visit the Emigration Center or if you would rather fancy a a swim in the very new and already famous swimmingpool due to its outstanding location and world-class design.

Please don´t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We are happy to assist you with organizing your free days in Skagafjörður.

The Hestasport team wishes you a pleasant stay!
